How to Choose the Right Mini Excavator: A Complete 0.8T-4T Size Guide
Buying a mini excavator is a long-term investment, and the most common mistake is choosing a machine by price or brand name alone. The right choice depends on one thing above all: matching the machine to the work it will actually do. Too small, and the machine struggles and slows your jobs. Too large, and you pay for capacity you never use - and may not be able to transport it at all.
In this guide we walk through the five steps we use with our own customers: size class, key specifications, features, transport, and cost of ownership.
Step 1: Match the size class to your application
Mini excavators are usually grouped by operating weight, and each class fits typical jobs:
0.8-1.2 ton: the compact end of the range. Fits through narrow gateways and works in indoor demolition, landscaping and tight residential yards. Small enough to transport in a pickup truck or small trailer.
1.5-2 ton: the most popular all-rounder class. General utility work, trenching for water and drainage lines, fence lines, and small foundation jobs. Our GX20 (2,000 kg operating weight, Kubota D902 engine at 11.8 kW, 2,060 mm digging depth, 1,100 mm machine width) is typical of this class.
2.5-3 ton: heavier trenching, basement excavation, and light demolition. More lifting capacity for attachments such as breakers and augers.
3.5-4 ton: farm drainage, pipe laying, and loader-style loading work where the machine must move material as well as dig.
A good rule of thumb: if more than 20% of your jobs happen in confined spaces, choose the smaller class and rent a bigger machine for the occasional heavy job.
Step 2: Compare the specifications that matter
Spec
What it means for you
Operating weight
Machine stability and transport cost; the number in the name
Max digging depth
Whether it reaches the pipe or foundation depth your jobs require
Max digging distance/reach
Whether it can work from a single position without repositioning
Engine power
Performance at altitude and with attachments
Track width / machine width
Gate and trailer width limits; stability on soft ground
Transport height
Whether it fits under bridges, gates and in containers
Always ask for the full specification sheet and compare at least three machines side by side. Numbers in a brochure should match the machine on delivery - we recommend checking serial plates on arrival.
Step 3: Feature checklist
Dozer blade: standard on most mini excavators; lets the machine level ground without a separate machine.
Cab vs canopy: a cab costs more but protects the operator from weather and noise, and is expected on rental machines in many markets.
Hydraulic quick coupler and attachments: augers, grapples, thumbs and breakers multiply what a small machine can do.
Rubber vs steel tracks: rubber protects paving and is quieter; steel lasts longer on abrasive sites.
Step 4: Transport and job site constraints
Measure before you buy: gate width, trailer payload, and container dimensions. A 2-ton class machine with a 1,100 mm width fits most standard trailers; larger classes need heavier transport. If you move the machine between sites weekly, transport convenience is a real cost, not a detail.
Step 5: Total cost of ownership
Fuel: a well-matched engine size saves fuel over the machine's whole life. Our GX20's Kubota D902 engine is engineered for low consumption - Kubota states 8% to 35% fuel savings on this engine family.
Parts and service: check that parts are available in your region and that the supplier can support the machine after delivery, not just sell it.
Warranty and documentation: confirm the warranty terms and ask for CE or equivalent certification documents before purchase.
